Projects Campus Event Calendar Phase II Contracts & Grants System (COEUS) Upgrade Haas Undergraduate Student Portal Retiree Return to Work Initiative UC Berkeley Foundation Donor Reporting User Interface Design Patterns & Guidelines Contracts & Grants System (COEUS) UpgradeProject Description: Nine years ago the Sponsored Projects Office undertook a project to replace an aging legacy contract and grant tracking system. The result was Berkeley Coeus, a client/server relational database application licensed from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and adapted for use at Berkeley. Coeus has been operational since 1998 as the Berkeley campus system of record for sponsored project activity. Since that time, however, information technologies and requirements in the contract and grant area have evolved rapidly, and in late 2004 a panel of external reviewers commissioned by Vice Chancellor Burnside and led by MIT recommended that Coeus be upgraded to the current MIT release. Coeus version 4.x is now a Java-based suite of modular applications with a wide range of new features supporting critical SPO and compliance business functions. Areas such as proposal, award, and subcontract tracking have been greatly enhanced in the new application, while new modules offer support for electronic development, routing, and submission of proposals, review and management of conflict of interest (COI) disclosures, tracking of contract negotiations, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) activities. A 'Coeus Lite' web application with full proposal development functionality is nearing release and will be included with the suite. The ultimate goal of the program is to upgrade Berkeley Coeus to the current version 4 release. The program philosophy is characterized by two key elements: the first, structuring the Berkeley implementation so that future releases from MIT can be incorporated with minimal difficulty; the second, maximizing use of the campus' new data center and provisioning, hosting, management, web farm, and storage services.
